Online Teaching of Productive Language Skills (PLS) during Emergency Remote Teaching (ERT) in EFL Classrooms: A Phenomenological Inquiry

This study aims to explore the experiences of English as a Foreign Language (EFL) teachers in teaching productive skills during emergency distance learning (ERT) and COVID-19 pandemic their recommendations for online. Phenomenological inquiry, which is one qualitative designs, was employed conduct study. It took place 2020-2021 academic year Turkey. Participants consisted 16 teachers. Convenience sampling executed designate participants. The main data collection tool semi-structured interview questions collected via individual interviews, focus group form by e-mail. Content analysis administered process. Study results explored mostly agreed on fact that online education had its advantages such easy materials access tools some disadvantages lack interaction, scaffolding, internet problems learner-related problems. Also, they stated it hard engage learners process, so used games, authentic materials, videos, discussions web 2.0 provide engagement. Teachers discovered new platforms make lessons efficient. They suggested changing assessment style, making participation compulsory conducting activities can learning-teaching Consequently, seen ERT challenging terms student participation; however, found solutions thought not bad idea teach online, especially speaking. Accordingly, hybrid be considered future skills.
